Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including its relationship to the characters, setting, and plot; provide an objective summary of the text.

In this introduction to our larger interdisciplinary unit entitled, Affluenza, we attempt to answer the question “What is happiness?”  through writing in journals, reading multiple and varied texts, and assessing what makes us happy by thinking about where our happiness really comes from.

This unit walks students through a variety of activities revolving around George Orwell's book '1984'.

The unit overview is designed to incoporate historical fiction novels that focus on the civil war time period.  In addition to the novels, students will build background knowledge by researching issues related to the civil war.  Research will take place electronically and students will create presentations for the class.

For this lesson, students will learn what theme is, understand what the most common themes are, and analyze the theme of short stories. As a final assessment, students will read a novel and write a 5 paragraph essay analyzing the theme.

For this project, students will show they understand plot, tone, and theme by creating an imovie that summarizes their book and theme while matching the music they create in Garage Band to the tone of the different parts of the book. The end project is similar to a movie trailer, but it summarizes the entire book.
