In this introduction to our larger interdisciplinary unit entitled, Affluenza, we attempt to answer the question “What is happiness?”  through writing in journals, reading multiple and varied texts, and assessing what makes us happy by thinking about where our happiness really comes from.

As a middle school English Language Arts teacher I look for creative ways to assess student learning.   I believe that if a student can teach a concept to his/her fellow students then I know that they have mastered that new knowledge.  In this blended learning unit students will become the teacher and teach a literary device using a presentation tool (Screencast-O-matic).

This unit is designed for students in the 6-8th grade range who are encountering algebra for the first time.  The content of this unit will produce students that are comfortable reading and writing algebraic expressions and equations, performing basic integer operations and finally, putting it all together to solve one-step algebraic equations.

Students have mastered solving equations and looking at solutions graphically. This unit is an extension and will have students investigate how to find to two equations. This unit will utilize investigate and exploration,  with some direct instruction, to solidify the process and procedures to finding and identifying solutions to systems.

This is a unit that formalizes the definition of functions. Students will connect the idea of mathematical relationships to the concept of functions. With a mix of direct instruction, guided notes with procedural practice, and individual practice, this unit will ground students in the concept and provide a deep understanding of its usefulness.

Before learning the format and features of The Constitution, the students  have a chapter that relates the challenges to governing post Revolutionary War and subsequent failure of our first form of government (The Articles of Confederation) during Shays’s Rebellion.

In this chapter, students will learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide polynomials using a couple of different methods.  Students will also learn how to factor binomials (standard and special products) and trinomials and solve quadratic equations by completing the square.

The goal of this assignment is for students to write an editorial, either by themselves or with a partner. This topic will be something they are interested in or passionate about and hold a particular opinion that they wish to share with others. The learning cycle will focus on students exploring topics and finding one they hold an opinion about.
