4th Grade Informational Unit

Description: 

This unit engages students in a variety of different reading standards through face to face and online components. In this unit, students will practice many skills to aid them in reading and understanding nonfiction texts. 

Learning Targets: 
Students will be able to identify the main idea of a text and explain how the author uses reasons and evidence to support this idea.
Students will be able to describe and identify differences in overall structure of informational texts.
Students will be able to describe how text features contribute to the understanding of the text in which they appear.
Students will be able to use details from a text to make inferences about the text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.2 Determine the main idea of a text and explain how it is supported by key details; summarize the text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.5 Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.7 Interpret information presented visually, orally, or quantitatively (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines, animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to an understanding of the text in which it appears.

CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.4.8 Explain how an author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points in a text.

 

 

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

This unit will be taught towards the middle of the year so students will have experience interacting with other reading standards and will be aware of the expectations.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

I have found success using both readworks and newsela in the past. Adding digital pieces to these lessons adds an additional piece that engages and can help students dive even further into these standards.
