To better support the initiatives around open educational resources in the state of Michigan, all resources on the Michigan Virtual Learning Object Repository (LOR) are being moved to #GoOpen Michigan on September 30th, 2018. During the transition, our LOR will be moved to an archived state, not allowing new user registration or new content to be added. 4th Grade Poetry Unit

Description: 

This unit is focused on figurative language, covering common core standards in language, literature for reading, and speaking and listening with the final assessment.  It is designed to be used with a workshop model, where there is some form of opening for brief instruction, partner and/or independent work time, and a closing time for sharing within each lesson.

Learning Targets: 
I can explain the meaning of common idioms, adages, and proverbs.
I can explain the meaning of similes and metaphors in context.
I can identify the elements of poems and describe its structure.
I can read and comprehend poetry at my grade level.
I can use strategies to determine the meaning of unknown words.

Students should have exposure to prose and drama prior to this unit, so they are able to compare and contrast their characteristics to poetry.

The unit is broken down into a day by day plan that outlines which standards are covered in each lesson.

Concepts demonstrated are common core reading and language standards.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

In preparation for this unit, it would be helpful to have school and/or classroom poetry books already pulled and ready for students to use.  Reference these books often and read aloud multiple poems each day to model concepts, in order to keep students engaged.  In order for the online resources to be easily accessible for students to use each day, it would be best to utilize a LMS in your classroom for posting the interactive notebook.
