My students have a difficult time with identifying strong textual evidence. I found that I must scaffold how to determine what evidence is. I provide many opportunities for students to learn how to use evidence to make their point. One of my favorite assignments is showing students a picture and having them try and determine what is going on in the pictures by citing evidence. Some students have difficulties with developing the counterclaims. Some students are very creative and can come up with some very interesting openers for their precise claims. I really like using google docs because I can see how often students are logging into their papers to write, read my comments and edit.
