To better support the initiatives around open educational resources in the state of Michigan, all resources on the Michigan Virtual Learning Object Repository (LOR) are being moved to #GoOpen Michigan on September 30th, 2018. During the transition, our LOR will be moved to an archived state, not allowing new user registration or new content to be added. An email with more details was sent to registered users of the LOR in September. To make use of the great resources on the platform, we encourage you to create an account and add your own new resources to the #GoOpen Michigan platform.

Career Prep

Description: 

In this unit "Career Prep", students will begin exploring their personality, skills, and interest to explore career choices that best fits their profile. Students will do further research on career choices and educational requirements. Students will also develop documents that will help promote and spotlight their skills and abilities.

Who Are You?

  • Holland Code Quiz--Personality and Interest quiz (Realistic,Investigative, Artistic, Social, Enterprising, and Conventional personality types
  • Completing a "Who Am I?" document to assist students with knowing their interest, hobbies and see what other perceive about them
  • Creating personality mapping 

Explore Career Match

  • Students explore career choices best suited from their personality quiz
  • Researching the career, requirements and educational requierements

Promote Yourself

  • Instructing students on "Promoting" them with resume', online video profiles or webpages
  •  
Learning Targets: 
Students will explore Career Clusters, programs, and education based on self-reflection
Student will meet international technology standards for Empowered Learner, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker and Creative Communicator
Students will create a digital portfolio that includes employability documents, video, and multimedia

How are the standards/objectives assessed?

The resources are connected to the standards by having students to read about their career choices and make logical decisions regarding their understanding of the career choice and educational requirements. Students will use mapping to assist with exploring the career choices, their hobbies, and interest to determine if those requirements suit their needs.Students will gather relevant information from the United States Career Bureau on statistics, salaries and education.  Students will also use media promote themselves.

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

The only student prerequisites is knowing the skills to required for searching information on the internet.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

Students start by brainstorming things about them--using bubbl.us to develop clusters. After which, students take the Holland Personality Quiz which gives them further insight on their personality, "realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising, and conventional." 

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

Career choices. According to research it is understood that most people these days may have several careers but it is never to early to have students explore their career options. 

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

Students really enjoyed this lesson which I developed more onto by adding interview skills, which students were allowed to wear business casual clothes for their interviews (we are a uniform school), proper hand shakes, mock application with job choices. Even so students sit on the panel to be interviewees, they loved that because after going over requirements some students came to their interview chewing gum. Students really got the opportunity to see what career best suits them and look at colleges that help with their choices.  At the middle school level it is not too early to have students to start thinking about their career options.
