Derivatives (Chain Rule)

Description: 

The unit is derivatives but the lesson that gives students the most difficulty is chain rule.  This unit is a blended unit that have students investigate more in class using the "chain rule".

Learning Targets: 
I can determine the inner and outer functions in a composition.
I can apply the chain rule to differentiate a composite function.

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

Students should have mastered limits Chapter 2 and basic derivative rules.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

It is taught first identifying the f(x) and g(x), then taking the derivative using the inside outside rule and then using the general rule for chain rule.

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

How to distinguish the inner function from the outer function.  How to distinguish f(x) and g(x) from f(g(x)).  How to determine the derivative of f(g(x)) is f ' g(x) * g' (x)

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

I tried to add quick formative assessments but the software I used educanon was a little blurry and no math equation editor.  It is very difficult to type math equations with out it.  I found using white board activities help some but my students still struggle with it.
