Discovering Angle Relationships Activity

Description: 

Students will interactively learn about the angle relationships including corresponding, alternate interior, alternate exterior, vertical, and same-side interior angles. They will learn which pairs are congruent and which pairs add up to 180 degrees (only assuming the lines are parallel). They will also have their first encounter with a transversal and how that fits into the equation.

Learning Targets: 
Students will be able to draw and identify a transversal
Students will be able to identify corresponding, alternate interior, alternate exterior, and same-side interior angles
Students will be able to solve equations using what they know about angle relationships

How are the standards/objectives assessed?

The completion of the students picture and worksheet (solving equations)

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

Students should know what Vertical Angles and the Linear Pair Theorem imply and how to identify them. The other pairs of angles will be "new", but students should be able to catch on quickly due to the helpful wordage such as "Alternate Interior". Visual learners will love this activity.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

These angle relationships will be used throughout the rest of this unit and beyond in Geometry. There will be multiple proofs that students will need to complete that involve angle relationships as well as algebra problems that will be reoccurring throughout the rest of the year.

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

The main concept displayed here is exploration and discovery of a new topic. Students will essentially be teaching themselves about these angle relationships by creating this picture and solving the equations.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

Successes - students that followed directions very carefully found lots of success. It is gratifying to see students discover new topics on their own without any teaching. They feel a sense of accomplishment and entitlement that they are capable of greater things than they thought. Challenges - like any school, the biggest problem students have is following instructions. Therefore, it takes a lot of patience by the teacher to help each student wherever they are at and also to encourage them to struggle with it for a while before they get "bailed out". Many students would rather be told what to do and avoid reading, but it is your job as a teacher to motivate them to try it on their own.
