Emergent Reader Class and Resource for Parents

Description: 

This course is designed to help parents of beginning (emergent) readers help their children learn how to read and stay interested in reading at home with their family.
I have taught kindergarten for the past 9 years. Through that time, I have learned that parents are at a loss for how to help their student when they get home. Many times it is because students are tired and they would like to play and relax when they get home after a long day at school. The fascinating thing about reading is, that anytime that you spend with your child reading is an opportunity for them to read, and it never has to feel like work! Most students love to read with their families and there are many games and books that will help your child feel like they are playing while they are learning with their parent.

Learning Targets: 
My students (parents) will become more confident to help their student at home.
They will learn the steps to take and what an emergent reader will look and sound like.
They will learn how to talk to their student(s) about what they have read and ask them questions to ensure comprehension.
They will create a few resources that they can use with their student on a regular basis and improve their reading environment at home.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

In this unit of the course, students will be given explanations on what a beginning reader looks and sounds like. They will also get information on how to help their reader by being given what a beginner reader needs to succeed, resources to help them ensure comprehension with their child and online sources that can continue to help students through an interactive experience when parents cannot be their to work with their students one on one.

Parents will use a variety of web 2.0 interactive tools to compile resources together. They will use blogs and in class information to get their knowledge for their activities.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

I have given parents this information year after year, through face to face conferences. All of these opportunities have worked for them. I am excited to see how they will work in a class setting rather than a conference setting. I hope that I will get a chance to help children through helping their parents learn more about reading and how to work with a young reader.
