Getting to Know You in Google Classroom

Description: 

This unit is an introduction to using the Google Classroom.  In it, students have lessons that utilize some of the different features in the classroom, focusing on the materials the teacher pushes out to students.  The first lesson concerns logging in and the difference between an announcement and assignment.  It goes on to cover different types of files (shared vs individual), how to writing, and submitting work online.  This would be a first introduction for students to Google Classroom to prepare students for more specialized lessons.

Students will need typing and computer navigation skills.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

These are modeled by the teacher or a student throughout the unit, depending on if it is the tools or site being modeled.  (Teacher models tools, student models site)

I have also included a link to some fantastic "cheat sheets" for using Google Classroom if you are unfamiliar with it as a resource.

I have selected students to model accessing the classroom for the first time, since the teacher path looks different than the student path.  This also lets me walk around the classroom to address issues as they arise. 

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

This lesson is an introduction to Google Classroom and some of the different types of files that can be used.  The skills will be applied throughout the year in more specialized lessons. These include logging in, navigating classroom announcements and assignments, submitting work, and editing and creating files.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

Utilize student helpers as much as possible. There is a huge range of comfort and abilities across students, and those that will finish the fastest will need to either be slowed down by being used as class leaders during each step or used as assistants around the room when they are done to help other students individually.
