Description: 

This is a German unit on restaurants and food.  Students will explore restaurants in German speaking countries via a virtual field trip.  Students will be able to identify the different types of eating establishments and the types of food and drink typically served in them.  Students will master food vocabulary and cultural nuances associated with eating out in Germany. 

Learning Targets: 
Be able to order food and pay the bill in German
Master food vocabulary for the unit
Explain cultural differences between America and Germany/Austria
Create a typical menu for a German/Austrian restaurant
Practice pronunciation and speaking in German

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

This unit is for a second year German class.  Students will need to have taken German 1 prior to this class.  This unit is typically taught the end of the first semester in German 2.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

Students will research eating establishments in German speaking countries and create a menu.

Students are quizzed on vocabulary both verbally and in a standard quiz format.

Students will record themselves reading German to measure pronunciation proficiency and reading skills. 

Students will perform a skit in German utilizing the unit vocabulary and cultural norms.

 

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

Students will learn the cultural differences relating to food and eating out in Germany.  Students will master vocabulary for this unit.  Students will perform a skit demonstrating mastery of vocabulary and incorporating cultural norms while eating out in Germany.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

Some students do not have internet access at home, so some class time should be set aside for using a computer lab.
