imovie Project

Description: 

For this project, students will show they understand plot, tone, and theme by creating an imovie that summarizes their book and theme while matching the music they create in Garage Band to the tone of the different parts of the book. The end project is similar to a movie trailer, but it summarizes the entire book.

Learning Targets: 
Students will analyze the theme, plot, and tone of a novel.
Students will complete a plot graph on their novel.
Students will summarize their book, making sure they include the rising action, climax, and resolution.
Students will apply technology and music to create a short video of the book.

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

Students are using their knowledge of theme, the elements of a story, mood, tone to create an imovie that summarizes the book and shows the different tones and the theme.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

I did this project with the last 5 chapters The Witch of Blackbird Pond and The Pearl. I found that students caught on to the technology quickly and loved finding the right song to fit with the tone of each slide. I required that students fill out the pre-writing on “Steps to Garaged Band/Imovie Project” and had me approve it before they could jump into the technology piece. If I didn’t, they would create before thinking through the entire project; consequently, they would not do the project correctly. Students loved to present their movies.
