Introduction to the 11 Body Systems

Description: 

This activity can be used as an introduction to Anatomy or altered to function as an overall review. Students will work in small groups to research, model, and present the anatomy, functions, and interrelationships of the 11 body systems. 

Learning Targets: 
Students will list the our 11 body systems?
Students will identify the organs belong to each system.
Students will identify the functions related to each system.
Students will identify how the different systems work together.

Overview

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

Materials/Resources:

Internet source (iphone, Ipad, Chrome Book, Lab Top, PC, any Anatomy and Physiology Text Book)

Human Body Template, Padlet, Youtube - 11 Body Systems Screencast, Google Forms -

Introduction/Warm-Up:

Surface Schema using a Think/Write

  1. Give students 2 minutes to think of all the organs, systems, and functions of the human body they can.

  2. Give students 3 minutes to write down their thoughts.

  3. Give students 2 minutes to pair/share their list.

  4. Bring class back together and make a word wall at the front of the room.

Procedure/Activities:

For this exploratory lesson, students are given 20 minutes to use whatever resources they choose to accomplish the following tasks.

    1. Identify which organs belong to your assigned system.

    2. Create those organs out of playdough and place them on your Human Body template. Take a picture of your template and upload it to Padlet.

    3. Research how the functions of your system are related to the other systems of the human body.

    4. Choose a spokesman to report your discoveries to the class.

  2. After students have uploaded all of their templates to padlet, groups are called up one by one to discuss their findings.  You can select a single entry on padlet and open it in a separate window to use as a visual aid during presentations.  (Plan on 5 minutes for students to present and transition to the next body system.)

As a quick follow up, you can access this kahoot covering the body sytems just present in class.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

I really liked this quick introduction to the body systems we will spend the year investigating. It gave everyone a base we could build off of, and got students thinking about science on the very first day of school.
