Media & Politics: Creating Your Own Soundbite

Description: 

Various forms of media can be used as powerful tools in an attempt to sway our opinion. For this project your students will produce a 30 second sound bite video that utilizes one or more of the propaganda techniques. They will attempt to sway the classes' opinion on a topic that they have a strong opinion on by way of this brief sound bite.

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

Students should have completed the earlier lesson on propaganda techniques.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

The procedure is being demonstrated via a student produced 'WeVideo' sound bite that follows the guidelines laid out in the rubric and guide attached. The students have read about the various propaganda techniques that are used in political advertising and now they need to create your own political ad using one of the propaganda techniques we have discussed.They can use PhotoStory 3 if they want still photos and narration, or WeVideo if they want to incorporate video segments into your ad. Both software applications are available on Chromebooks.

Instructions:
• Your ad can either be about a public policy that you care about or about a current political candidate of your choice.
• You will share your propaganda ad with the class and we should be able to tell what propaganda technique(s) were used.
• Please read over the flowchart and the scoring rubric found in google classroom before starting

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

The procedure being demonstrated is that of using propaganda techniques successfully to sway opinion. It will be helpful for the students to gain experience producing their own short sound bite and practicing out some of the propaganda techniques often utilized by media campaigns.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

Student have over the years produces some really quality videos that are also quite convincing and could sway opinion.
