Music Theory/Skills/Composition Unit

Description: 

This unit takes students through fundamental foundations of music creation that is based in both western music notation as well as technology based composition practices. The scope of the unit covers essential musical knowledge used to create music as well as a bevy of online tools used to create, collaborate and publish music. 

Learning Targets: 
Identify musical structures and forms
Analyze fundamental musical concepts such as tempo and meter
Demonstrate an understanding of online audio engineering tools
Demonstrate an expressive artistic vision through music
Share finished products using online platforms

How are the standards/objectives assessed?

This unit involves audio engineering by utilizing online tools for audio manipulation and sound design.  Students must learn to manipulate these tools using feedback through speakers and/or headphones.

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

A passion and love for music. A desire for creating original music. A basic understanding for how a computer and/or tablet functions. A functional e-mail address for account creation for the online tools.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

Listening to music for the basic concepts dealing with the analysis of form and structure will be demonstrated using speakers and/or headphones.  Audio engineering concepts will be demonstrated using Soundtrap.com, which is a web-based audio editing/engineering application. 

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

Musical concepts of Form, Structure, Tempo, Beat, Meter, Chord Progressions, and Lyrics are all being demonstrated. Also, audio engineering concepts such as reverb, compression, audio editing, panning, volume and looping may also be explored.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

This has been one of the most rewarding units I have ever taught as a music teacher. The products of this unit have been utilized for many years following completion as tools for understanding how music works. This unit celebrates student ownership, it celebrates the process of learning over the product and most importantly it provides a clear path toward self knowledge and realization.
