Natural Logs Lesson

Description: 

In this lesson, students will learn about the number e as well as the 3 rules (product, quotient, power) and how to use them to condense and expand expression using natural logs.

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

Students should have heard and/or seen the number e (2.71). They should also have seen and/or used the laws of logarithms which are very similar to the laws of natural logs.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

The laws of logarithms and natural logarithms are things that will be used for the remainder of the unit, year, and on standardized tests (ACT, SAT).

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

The students will be required to determine which natural log rule is being demonstrated in the given example and then they will have to use their knowledge of the rules to solve the example.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

Successes - students did very well with this lesson because they already learned the laws of logarithms which are almost identical to the laws of natural logarithms. They did very well with all three of the rules. Challenges - the idea of ""e"" being a number (roughly equal to 2.71) was a hard concept for a few students to grasp. Also, a few students struggled to understand that every natural log has a base of ""e"", because the regular logarithms could have any base (10, 20, 2000, etc).
