Plagiarism

Description: 

This unit is an introduction to plagiarism for elementary students.  Also included are some note taking strategies, as those help students avoid plagiarizing. It covers two 60 minute lessons. This unit is best used preceding a research project.

Learning Targets: 
Students will be able to define plagiarism.
Students will be able to use a graphic organizer to take notes.

How are the standards/objectives assessed?

This lesson is assessed by the teacher visually and through individual discussions.  Print outs of the final student product can also be used.

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

Students will need to have basic mouse skills and be able to navigate your chosen form of online classroom.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

Day 1:

Ask students to define plagiarism.  Write down their definition/thoughts in a KWL chart (chart can be filled in on the computer and projected).

Discussion.

  1. Is there a difference between plagiarizing and copying?

  2. How do you think the person who is being plagiarized feels about it?

  3. What are some times you might plagiarize? (with or without meaning to)

  4. What ideas do you have on avoiding plagiarism?

  5. What questions did you have that we’ve answered now?

Write down some of their answers into the L portion of the chart.

Day 2:

Review:

What do you remember about Plagiarism?

Short discussion on what it is and how we can avoid it.

Explain that taking notes correctly is an important way to avoid plagiarizing.  Note taking is summarizing or paraphrasing, but not direct copying.

Watch video demo and then do one module (mosquito. aardvark, etc) together as a class.  Students can work individually or as partners after that. Walk around and check their work. Students can print these if you want a hard copy for assessment.  I recommend pairing students based on their reading strength, pairing lower students with higher students (making sure the lower students are still able to contribute to the discussion).  I pair based on my seating assignments, which follow Cooperative Learning guidelines of High, Med-High, Med-Low, Low), putting the High with Med-Low and Med-High with Low)

Explain to students these are the skills that will translate to research projects we will do in future classes.

The concept of plagiarism is being explained.  Note taking strategies are being explained and demonstrated. 

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

Sharing the links on a classroom platform works better than directing students to individual links on a webpage.  This allows you to have more differentiated instruction options.  I prefer Google Classroom, but my students have google accounts and with elementary students I prefer the easier to navigate, simpler layout.
