Seesaw (digital portfolio) Lesson Plan #1 - MVU LOR

Description: 

Introduction to Seesaw for K and 1st grade level speech/language groups .  Seesaw is a student driven digital portfolio, to share student work with parents..  I will be using Seesaw to improve parent involvement with speech homework (send copies of practice words, activities, etc.)  as an additional means of communication (add video clips of what we are up to in speech class), as well as a motivational tool for students to view their work and progress (show their progress over time, eg., an articulation sample for beginning of the year and end of the year).

Learning Targets: 
Students create their first post in Seesaw, which could be an activity from class or homework sheet.

How are the standards/objectives assessed?

They will learn the process of independently accessing the Seesaw app, scanning the QR code, uploading their materials into their Seesaw folder, and “liking or commenting” on a post.

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

Introduction/Warm-Up:

What is Seesaw? I will have my students open the Seesaw app after Introducing it to them.  I will demonstrate/model the digital portfolio as a place

to share their speech progress, activities, and homework and have them upload a worksheet or video clip to post to their page..

Procedure/Activities:

  1. Practice logging into the Seesaw app and using the QR code.

  2. Present target or activity (varies per each speech/language group and student).

  3. Take turns filming their speech/language productions.

  4. Review their post and then submit their post.

  5. Show them how I can comment/approve their posts.

  6. I will approve their post and submit it.

  7. Add a “like or comment” to their post or friends post.

Lesson Conclusion/Summary:

Review the process and reiterate how we would use Seesaw in the future (to show progress, to share with parents, to assign homework, etc.)

Follow-Up Lesson(s):

They will demonstrate understanding of uploading an activity to Seesaw.  Future lessons will expose the students to the use of various “tools” (video, drawing, recording, etc.) that could be used to create a post.  

 

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

Notes/Reflection:

  • Continue to move through the lessons per individual/group rate of success.

  • Students enjoyed using the iPads and video taping their productions.  The speech students were able to hear themselves talk on a recording device and see their mouth position for particular sound productions.  This activity provided excellent engaging feedback for their sound approximations.

  • The language groups enjoyed retelling a short story and hearing it back.  They were able to provide correction and edit any errors on their retell as well as give feedback to their classmates.
