Social Psychology (AP)

Description: 

This lesson, using online video resources, recorded Powerpoint lectures, and online simulations, allows the students to grasp a full understanding of what social psychology is (as presented in a intro to psychology format), and to give meaning to why people do what they do, and interact in specific ways with one another.

Learning Targets: 
Describe what social psychology means.
Describe and evaluate ways in which people can be influenced by others.
Understand why prejudice occurs.
Demonstrate an understanding of why we form relationships with others and what we look for in our partners.
Evalutate and understand why conflicts occur amongst humans.

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

Students need to have a basic background on what psychology is, and also the parts of an experiment.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

The concepts are presented through video cast presentations, the psych sim program (available for free) and also with a social psychology experiment that students must design. Also by using youtube videos, the students can see these concepts demonstrated as well.

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

The concepts of social influence, social relations, and the whole idea of social psychology, all from an advanced placement point of view.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

The unit itself was very successful and students seem to meet the expectations that were listed. However, one thing that was a challenge was to get the students to watch the video lectures. If using this lesson, I would use some type of quiz or discussion question to go along with the video. Typically, with the psych sim documents and simulation, I will allow the students to do them, then as a class we discuss the major themes and concepts. It makes the students responsible for the learning, not just relying on the teacher for the information.
