During the transition, our LOR will be moved to an archived state, not allowing new user registration or new content to be added. Starting a Robotics Club

Description: 

Students will learn how to engage in a robotics club.  Students will work in teams to design and build a robot to complete a series of given tasks.  Students will also learn how to program a robot to perform certain functions.

Learning Targets: 
Students will learn how to design and build a robot. Students will also learn programming essentials to help them program their robot to complete a given task.
They will gain an understanding of learning through trial and error and be comfortable and confident in redesigning as needed.
Students will compare multiple solutions to solve a given task and evaluate and explain the most effective approach.
Students will be able to design, build and program a robot to complete a given set of task using provided materials.

How are the standards/objectives assessed?

Students will be assessed on their engagement, discussion and group participation.

Students will create and draw design ideas in science notebook.

Students will be evaluated on ability to effectively evaluate and modify design approach.

Student groups will be monitored to ensure they are understanding the build video steps correctly.  Assistance will be provided as needed.

Student groups will be monitored to ensure the team can successfully connect the controller and drive the robot.  Assistance will be provided as needed.

Student groups will be monitored to ensure all team members can successfully contribute to the programming aspects.  Assistance will be provided as needed.

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

Students will not need any prerequisite skills or knowledge.  Experience building with LEGOS will be helpful.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

Students will work through designing, building, driving and programming a robot.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

Students LOVE robotics.  It is a large tasks so it helpful to break it into small chunks for the students to add meaning and limit frustration.  Teams feel a great sense of accomplishment and pride after completing each tasks.  Students are very eager to share their accomplishments and love reaching out to share their expertise with other groups that may be struggling with a given task.
