Student Led IEP

Description: 

Student led IEPs allow the student to be actively engaged in the process of planning the meeting as well as being an active participant in the meeting.  This activity introduces the development of a Google slide presentation by the student that will be shared as the main focus of the IEP meeting.  

Learning Targets: 
Students will create a tool (Google Slide presentation) which will support the sharing of information at their annual IEP meeting.
Students will share important information at IEP meeting.

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

Introduction/Warm-Up:

Discussion about IEP involvement thus far. How have they felt about attending the meetings?  Do they feel that their voices were heard?  We are going to work on a tool to assure them they will have a voice in their meeting.

Procedure/Activities:  Students will complete a google slide presentation that they will present during their IEP meeting.

Creation of first slide.  (Show sample)  This is a great introduction to Google Slides.

First slide is an introduction of the student (For example, Hi, I am Stacey Porritt - WELCOME TO MY IEP)

Introduction to adding photos to slides….Teach students how to take photo with phone or Ipad (if needed), how to send photo via email to gmail account (if needed), how to upload into slide, how to change placement and size.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

This is such an empowering activity for my students to complete.  Instead of being passive participants in THEIR IEP meeting, they are leading it as active participants.  It has such a different feel than a traditional IEP meeting.  Parents are thrilled to hear their student’s voice in the meeting as well.  Everyone leaves feeling very positive.
