Summative Assessment over Spain Cultural Video with Plickers

Students watched a video segment before taking the Plickers quiz.

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

Materials/Resources:

  • Account (free) in plickers.com

  • Class created in Plickers: copy and paste a class list to Plickers

  • Set of questions with choices and answers marked in Plickers

  • Class set of Plickers cards

  • Cell phone or tablet for teacher

Introduction/Warm-Up:

Students get out notes they took during video segment and review and organize them.

Each student has a Plickers card ready.

Procedure/Activities:

  • Teacher:

    • On your computer connected to the Smart Board, go to My Library in your Plickers account, and choose the class involved.

    • Choose Live Session.

    • Open the Plickers app on your own cell phone or tablet.

    • Choose the correct class.

    • Choose the desired set of questions from the library.

    • Add a question to the queue, and click Scan..

    • The question will appear on the Smart Board.

    • Direct the students to hold up their Plickers card so as to choose A, B, C, or D.

    • Scan the class with your device until the board shows that all students’ responses have been recorded.

    • Repeat the process by adding the next question to the queue.

    • When finished, choose End Session.

    • You can then download a report that will show responses and grades for all students.

Lesson Conclusion/Summary:

At the end, the class may discuss questions and responses as well as the topics involved.

Assessment: Formative /Summative

I used this as a summative assessment. The class watched the video segment “Castile Region” of the Rick Steves in Spain DVD, with a guest teacher. They took some notes during the video session. Then this lesson was used as an open-notes quiz to hold students accountable for material presented on a day with a guest teacher.

Follow-Up Lesson(s):

I used Plickers in the same fashion with other cultural lessons. We have also used Plickers for discussion questions submitted by student groups, allowing the other groups to respond to their questions.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

Students enjoy Plickers because it is unique and interactive, involving the entire class at all times. I like that I can administer an assessment and have immediate scores available. With discussions, I like that the class can see all responses immediately. The real advantage to Plickers, however, is that it involves technology and individual responses, but students do not need a device!
