Three Digit Addition and Subtraction - Second Grade

Description: 

This unit is designed to teach addition and subtraction with regrouping to second graders. It includes links to online resources, videos created using SMART Board, Educanon and Plotagon. Links to sites are included to provide support to different learners, and activities were selected to develop the language needed to explain the steps in the algorithm.

Learning Targets: 
Be able to regroup numbers in order to add and subtract through the hundreds place.

How are the standards/objectives assessed?

Formative assessments are included throughout the unit in the form of online and in class activities to help guide instruction. Students are directed to create instructional videos to explain the algorithm to develop language and demonstrate a deep understanding of the steps in the algorithm. An online and paper/pencil version of the summative assessment is also included.

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

Prerequisites include place value through 1,000 and addition and subtraction with regrouping through the tens place.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

This is a blended learning unit with face-to-face and online activities for second grade students. The underlying goal is to develop a deep understanding of the algorithm that can be explained by students using their knowledge of place value.

Addition and subtraction with regrouping through the hundreds place.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

This blend is proving effective with second graders. They are very capable of working online and creating videos to explain their learning. It has prompted us to create "2 Tube" for our class and post videos of learning on our website. I think they are able to demonstrate a deeper understanding for the steps involved in regrouping than previous classes.
