Unit 2: Writing & Solving Linear Equations

Description: 

Students will learn how to write linear equations to describe phenomenon.  Students will also learn how to solve equations in multiple steps including equations that have no solution or infinitely many solutions.

Learning Targets: 
Model phenomenon with linear equations.
Solve equations in multiple steps using properties of equalities.
Solve literal equations for a stated variable.

How are the standards/objectives assessed?

Students will be assessed formatively through goFormative & GoogleForms.  Students will be assessed summatively by a paper-and-pencil end of unit test.

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

Students should have a solid foundation in basic mathematics operations and writing algebraic expressions.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

In this unit, students will receive instruction through video lessons viewed outside of class.  Through class activities such as puzzles, mazes and worksheets, students will practice equation solving and writing equations.

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

Students will learn that equation solving is a process with sequential steps that uses mathematical properties of equality.  Students will also learn that each equation will result in exactly one answer, infinitely many answers or no answers.  Lastly, students will learn that situations in their lives can be modeled using linear equations.
