World Religions

Description: 

This unit is designed to provide 11th grade students with a basic understanding of the 5 Major World Religions.  Included for each religion are:  origins, development, beliefs, and impact.  The unit incorporates elements of online learning with face-to-face interactions.  

Learning Targets: 
Identify common purposes of religions.
Define 'religion'.
Explain the origins and spread of each major religion.
Evaluate how each major religion fulfills the common purposes of religion.
Compare and contrast the five major religions in terms of their beliefs, scope, and role in the world today.

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

I always preface this unit with a discussion on tolerance and diversity.  While discussing religion, many students have preconceived beliefs, and I try to encourage them to have an open-minded approach to this unit.  This lesson is usually taught early in World History courses and is often referred to in the units that follow.  

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

Students will be exposed to the development, progression, and impact of five major World Religions:  Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam.  This unit is meant to introduce and provide exposure to each of the major World Religions. 

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

In my experience, students often approach this unit with an inquisitive mind.  They are usually very curious about other religions, but are also very skeptical of beliefs they are not accostomed to.  I encourage having a discussion with students about being open-minded and respectful of other people's opinions.  Overall, this unit has been well-received by students and encourages some great conversations in the classroom that can connect to many current events.
