Writing with Pronouns

Description: 

Students will play a game to review pronouns. Then they will learn how to write a friendly letter. With their knowledge of the kinds of pronouns, they will write a friendly letter to an author or favorite book character using pronouns from every pronoun category.

Learning Targets: 
Students will learn what pronouns are.
Students will write a letter and identify the pronouns.

How are the standards/objectives assessed?

Students will end the lesson by writing a friendly letter using pronouns from a variety of categories.

Student prerequisite skills and knowledge

Students should have learned about pronouns years prior.

How is the concept or procedure explained or demonstrated?

1. The teacher should break the class into groups of 3-4. The teacher could either have them create Google docs that they share together or set up private Wikis. 2. In the Wikis or the Google Docs, students should list as many pronouns as they possibly can. They are NOT allowed to Google the answer. 3. When students are done, they should go here: http://www.english-grammar-revolution.com/list-of-pronouns.html - to see how many pronouns they have that are correct. They get 1 point per correct pronoun. Whichever group has the most points wins! 4. Once the game is over,

What concepts or procedures are being explained or demonstrated in this lesson object?

Students will learn about the variety of pronouns and their categories. They will also learn how to write a letter.

What was your experience, both successes and challenges, using this lesson object with your students?

I found that students do not know that there are more than just personal pronouns. The first activity helps them see how many words are considered pronouns. I also found that identifying pronouns doesn't always help them in writing. Having students end the lesson by using the pronouns while learning to write a friendly letter, helps them with their grammar and writing skills.
