Dear LOR user,

Thank you for being a big part of this community. To better support the initiatives around open educational resources in the state of Michigan, all resources on the Michigan Virtual Learning Object Repository (LOR) are being moved to #GoOpen Michigan (link is external) on September 30th, 2018. During the transition, our LOR will be moved to an archived state, not allowing new user registration or new content to be added. An email with more details was sent to registered users of the LOR in September. To make use of the great resources on the platform, we encourage you to create an account and add your own new resources to the #GoOpen Michigan platform (link is external).

Language Arts

In this blended unit students will review the parts of a story including characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. Students will analyze a character based on their words, actions and thoughts. Students will describe complex characters, and identify character motivation giving supporting details from the text.

Currently, poetry is something we teach “if there is time” at the end of the year. I would love to make poetry a more integral part of the 1st grade curriculum. Poetry is currently taught by the students reading a preprinted packet of poetry and the students knowing that they are poems.  It's a very archaic way of teaching it, and I would love to change that.

"The Cow’s Horn” is about a boy who doesn’t make his town’s travel soccer team. On a deeper level, it conveys the message that what might be seen as failure can also lead to valuable opportunities.

Students will discover the meaning behind and uses for adjectives, adverbs, conjunctions, prepositions and other elements of grammar.   They will work in partners or groups to create a visual presentation that will teach classmates the most important and useful characteristics of their assigned grammar element.
