Thank you for being a big part of this community. To better support the initiatives around open educational resources in the state of Michigan, all resources on the Michigan Virtual Learning Object Repository (LOR) are being moved to #GoOpen Michigan (link is external) on September 30th, 2018. During the transition, our LOR will be moved to an archived state, not allowing new user registration or new content to be added. An email with more details was sent to registered users of the LOR in September. To make use of the great resources on the platform, we encourage you to create an account and add your own new resources to the #GoOpen Michigan platform (link is external).

## Weather and Climate PBL

Using NGSS for third grade, students will learn about climate and weather and then design, describe, and defend a structure that protects something against the blizzard conditions found in Michigan.  Learners will design a blizzard-resistant structure. Since this is a PBL, many ELA content standards are also included.

## Kindergarten Weather and Climate Unit

Kindergarten students will identify and observe seasonal weather changes, create a weather safety precaution plan, and observe and record climate changes that relate to the area where they live.

## Mineral Inquiry Lab Scenario

Students will work through a scenario dealing with mineral identification and how minerals are used. They will be given samples of minerals to identify using testing techniques and a list of properties of minerals. Then using their results they must determine which piece of property they would purchase to provide resources to make specific products.

## Saltwater/Freshwater Density Lab

Students will determine the density of freshwater, saltwater, and cold water vs. hot water. They will use a golfball as a visual because it will float in the salt water. Using the density difference data, students will answer questions about oceans and currents formed.

## Air Up There Lab-Investigating Air Pressure

Students will make molecules to model a column of air, so they can understand how water in the atmosphere affects air pressure. Students will be weighing their columns of air to see how the weight changes as they add more water molecules to the air column. Then they will use their results to answer questions about air pressure and weather.

## Environmental Controversey Paper

Students are given a scenario dealing with a river in a small community that is debating on allowing a company to come in and use the water from the river for its manufacturing processes. The student is the mayor of the town and has to give a "speech" about whether or not to allow this to happen. The scenario lists many of the people in the town and what their opinions are about the factory.

Students will use data from observation wells and a cross-section of the Badwater Landfill Study area to sketch the water table for three different months. Using the sketches from the data students will answer questions about the study area and how groundwater will move throughout the three months.

## Coal, Electricity, and Carbon Dioxide Activity

Students will research information about coal in order to figure out the amount of electricity used in a typical classroom, the actual cost to run the lights in a typical classroom, the amount of coal it would take to produce the amount of electricity needed to run the lights, and the amount of carbon dioxide produced when the coal is burned.
