Science

The students will use a Hertzsprung-Russell(HR) Diagram simulation/animation from a website for this lab. This site allows the student to manipulate the variables of stars from the HR diagram (temperature, color, spectral type, size/mass, luminosity), in order to understand how stars can be classified/categorized.

This investigation will allow students to experience how chemical and physical changes play a role in the classification of matter. Specifically, students will be investigating three different combinations of substances and determining compounds or mixtures.

The goal of this lab is to introduce students to phase change diagrams. Students will conduct an investigation that will allow them to collect temperature readings of water from its solid state to its gas state.

A study of human chromosomes, heredity and subsequent genetic disorders. The latter part of the unit will explore the many current biotechnological processes, their applications, impacts and ethical dilemas for humans.

This blended learning unit will focus on teaching lower elementary students about basic needs of plants and animals, the parts of a flower, and the stages and sequence of the life cycle of a butterfly and a frog.

The following unit is part of the final unit for the Prentice Hall Explorer Astronomy text.  This unit focuses on how the universe formed, the sun, planets, as well as comets, asteriods and meteors.

In this lab students will conduct an experiment that will allow them observe how different phases of matter conduct energy differently. Specifically, students will be using marbles (clumped together with different densities) to represent the three phases of matter and see how a golf ball will transfer its energy differently through each phase.

This short one day lab experience gives students a closer look into how the bonding between atoms of a compound impacts how the compound looks and behaves. Specifically, students will identify how ionic compounds and covalent compounds differ in properties of shape, solubility, melting point and conductivity.

With the switch to NextGen Standards there is a lot of investigations, science skills and data collection imbedded in the science curriculum. This is a great lab to start the school year and introduce students to proper measurement skills. I use this investigation to set the standard for what I expect with measurement.
